MESSAGES FROM THE SCOUTMASTER

“No one can pass through life, any more than he can pass through a bit of country, without leaving tracks behind, and those tracks may often be helpful to those coming after him in finding their way.”

— Robert Baden-Powell (founder of Scouts)

Welcome to Troop 67!

I am the Scoutmaster of the Unit, Scoutmaster Chris.  I have over 15 years of experience as an adult leader in the BSA.  I have completed numerous in-person and online training courses, including Scouting University and the leadership training course - Woodbadge.

My priority is ensure the Scouts conduct their activities following all safety regulations.  Second to this is to make sure they plan a quality program. My job is more like a coach, offering guidance and suggestions instead of instruction and orders.  Allowing the scouts to make their own decisions gives them ownership of the successes and failures.

A large part of our Troop focus is on an active outdoor program.  This includes camping, hikes, and many other activities.  Troop 67 follows a Youth-led model, meaning that the Scouts come up with their activity ideas, camp together, plan and cook their own meals, and work on skills using the E.D.G.E. method.  We also implement the Patrol method, meaning that a smaller group of about 5-8 scouts, work together as a unit.  They plan meals and activities that they want to try.

Some specific highlights of our program:

  • We host a (week-long or weekend) camp about 9-10 times a year.
  • We schedule at least one adventure trip per year.  In 2023 we went to Gettysburg, PA & MassJam.  For 2024, we are going on  a 5-day outing that includes a zipline tour and whitewater rafting.
  • We attend a week-long summer camp at JN Webster in Ashford, CT.
  • We have our own private campground.
  • At least one activity per month such as rock climbing, frisbee golf, bowling, escape room.
  • We have our own game room with foosball and air hockey - when the dreary days outside warrant a break to go indoors.

In summary, we focus on learning skills, instilling leadership qualities, and promoting teamwork/team building.

I would enjoy sharing more stories with you and your scout.  Please reach out so I can invite you to our next meeting.  oakdaletroop67sm@gmail.com

Happy Scouting,

Scoutmaster Chris
